With experience delivering bespoke approaches to achieving compliance, managing risk, and ensuring that outcomes are optimised for our clients, discover how our approach and execution have made a tangible impact.
Case Study 1: Filing Tax Returns For a Growing Retail SME
GreenHarvest Supplies is a fast-growing retail business operating in the Las Vegas region. Due to its rapid growth, normal transactions quickly became difficult and complex, resulting in late and inaccurate filing of tax returns for both VAT and income taxes. Late filing resulted in penalties and possible non-filing of tax returns.
Tax Savvy Uganda reviewed the existing accounting process and provided training to their in-house staff. We also instituted the use of digital ledger management and implemented an annual tax calendar. Tax Savvy Uganda’s team (Sharon – Accountant) worked with GreenHarvest’s internal finance department to identify errors in past filings, and together we created a framework for future tax return filings.
In just two filing cycles, GreenHarvest Supplies was able to stop late penalties and received an award from the local tax authority for improved compliance. The company now enjoys our continued support and standard tax health checks.
Case Study 2: Obtaining Tax Exemption for an NGO
The Problem: The FutureMinds Foundation, a non-profit organization in Las Vegas, was unaware of the full range of available tax exemptions. Even though they were already registered as an exempt organization, the foundation was paying costs and administrative time due to assessments of incorrect taxes on donations, grants, and certain operating expenses.
Our Approach: Gordon conducted an in-depth analysis of FutureMinds’ financial situation and identified various exemption opportunities that had been previously missed. Tax Savvy Uganda took care of the overall preparation and filing of the necessary exemption documentation with the IRS and state departments, as well as staff training on how to manage the organization’s exemption requests. Additionally, we set up a system for staff to monitor compliance with all applicable requirements.
The Outcome: The organization was allowed full recovery of over $17,000 in prior taxes and is now able to operate at greatly reduced administrative costs. Our advice continues to add value to the organization, allowing it more time to invest in its mission.
Case Study 3: Managing a Complex Tax Audit For a Technology Startup
The Problem: ByteWave LLC, a technology development startup, was notified of a surprise audit over reported income and expense discrepancies. Founders who were focused on product design and research & development had little knowledge of the audit process. They were worried about penalties, reputational damage, and business interruptions.
The Plan: Martin, our Head of Department for Returns and Audits, was appointed the principal person to coordinate the audit response. We quickly formed a specialized team to scrutinize ByteWave’s ledgers, adjust for discrepancies, and respond to authorities’ queries. Our experts represented ByteWave on the ground, replied to every query from the authority, and kept the company’s directors apprised of developments in the audit.
The Outcome: An audit without penalty. ByteWave benefited from expert recommendations for strengthened internal controls and now engages Tax Savvy Uganda quarterly for audit health checks and advisory services.
Case Study 4: Implementing EFRIS for a Restaurant Chain
The Challenge: A chain of restaurants with seven outlets scattered across Nevada, UrbanBite Restaurants found it difficult to implement the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solutions (EFRIS) system required by Uganda Revenue Authority for processing all their cross-border transactions. High volumes of manual invoicing resulted in periodic billing delays and an increased risk of non-compliance.
Our Solution: Tax Savvy Uganda created a unique EFRIS/DTS implementation team where we provided the technical setup and staff training to all 7 outlets. We ensured that the data were integrated with UrbanBite’s existing POS system with accurate reporting, and provided 24/7 support from our help-desk during the implementation phase.
The Result: Within six weeks, UrbanBite was 100% compliant, with a 30% reduction in errors relating to invoicing. Operational efficiencies were gained and service delivery was enhanced with real-time access to tax liabilities. UrbanBite continues to enjoy the value we bring by consistently providing tailored support and conducting periodic system health check reviews.
Case Study 5: Recovering VAT Refunds For a Professional Services Firm
The Issue: Professional services firm Atlas Consulting Group, based in Las Vegas, NV, faced thousands of dollars in overpayments, resulting from complex estimated tax calculation and confusion over eligibility for certain tax deductions. In prior efforts to claim refunds, cash flow was lost with no refunds secured.
Our Solution: Tax Savvy Uganda performed a deep dive into Atlas’s tax claiming history to identify all eligible refunds and prepare other supporting documents. We then prepared detailed and convincing claims to the IRS. We managed all correspondence and objections through the claims process.
The Outcome: Atlas Consulting Group received $48,000 in refunds within eight weeks. We also provided advisory on how to maximize their tax planning so future filings would reflect entitlements and avoidance of overpayments.
Case Study 6: Training and Mentoring the Finance Team of a Manufacturing Business
The Problem: Silverline Manufacturing is a mid-sized company with a rapidly growing workforce. The company experienced training and expertise gaps within their accounting team. These gaps in training and experience had resulted in frequent errors creating and reconciling their ledger, as well as missed closing dates.
Our Approach: Tax Savvy Uganda created a customized training and mentoring solution for Silverline. Techniques taught included tax law updates, EFRIS compliance, and best practices for day-to-day bookkeeping. Training was delivered through practical workshops, one-on-one mentoring, and subscriptions to our monthly tax advisory articles.
The Outcome: With our assistance, Silverline Manufacturing’s finance team became more accurate in their work, filed all returns on time, and as a result, they filed zero returns late the following tax year. The company now benefits from the renewed confidence of staff and an improved internal culture of compliance.
